Project's goal

Find a faster method for measuring basic tribodiagnostic quantities.

Cost savings

Results

Cost savings by using continuous on-line measuring MOTU.

Description of solution

Our team decided to create a portable oil laboratory in order to save the time of technicians when performing lengthy measurements of tribodiagnostic quantities in the FabLab laboratory and especially to reduce downtime of important machines. We named this new laboratory with the abbreviation of MOTU – from the English name of ‘Mobile Tribodiagnostic Online Unit’. After being connected to the hydraulic system’s pressure branch, the MOTU is able to simultaneously measure basic tribodiagnostic quantities (e.g. amount of water, mechanical impurities and oil viscosity) directly at the machine without the need to transfer samples to our laboratory, and so we can immediately define the current oil condition and then effectively respond to the needs of the monitored machine.

Benefits

  • Savings of around EUR 20 thousand per year
  • Extended lifetime of oils
  • Reduction of machinery downtime (Category A)
  • Reduction of environmental impacts
  • Speed, mobility, remote access
