Project's goal

Secure operability of production lines in Škoda Auto car production body shops by means of elimination of micro power outages.

Downtime reduction

Results

In one year, we have eliminated more than 250 micro power outages.

Description of solution

For good functioning, each car production machine needs proper and stable supply of process power. This is also the case of production lines in our Škoda Auto body shops where it is necessary to have stable electric voltage without micro outages (outages of power lasting for several seconds).  In case of outages, our body shops use the so-called buffers which are back-up devices, very similar to, for instance, common UPS that we already know from IT world. However, the standard, widely used energy buffer in our paint shops which was to secure the supply of electricity for car production machinery even in case of outages was able to back-up the given device only for several seconds. These several seconds were not sufficient for car production, and thus we faced a task of creating a new, better solution. Our team designed, tested a brand new type of energy buffer and integrated in to the Internal Technical Standard (ITS). The new buffer has three times longer back-up time of the entire car production process in the event of power outage, and thus it eliminates downtimes of production lines by approximately 250 minutes per year.

Benefits

  • Up to 3x longer back-up of production lines
  • Increase of technical usability of machinery in body shops
  • Elimination of micro power outages
  • Integration of the new energy buffer in the Internal Technical Standards (ITS) of Škoda Auto
